The constant rubric of the Buisk fertilizer plant “Question-answer” in this article will raise the topic of saturation of plants with calcium. It is no secret that calcium is an element necessary for absolutely all plants, which, unfortunately, is very poorly absorbed from fertilizers available and familiar to summer residents, for example, from dolomite flour. In order to provide calcium to plants in spring, liming should be carried out since autumn. But what if the plant needs calcium now? Calcium nitrate will help.

Question: Why do I need calcium nitrate?

This question will be answered by the head of the agricultural chemical service of Buisky Chemical Plant OJSC Belozerov Dmitry Alexandrovich.

Answer: Calcium nitrate is a unique fertilizer of its kind. The only fertilizer available that contains fully water-soluble calcium and some nitrate nitrogen. There is also calcium chelate (produced by Buisky Chemical Plant OJSC - Helatem Sa), but so far it is distributed only to professionals - greenhouse plants, agricultural enterprises.

We already talked about chelated forms of fertilizers in the article “Everything you need to know about chelated fertilizers” from our Question and Answer section.

Of the soil fertilizers, the highest calcium content, but inaccessible, is possessed by calcareous fertilizers — limestone and dolomite flour (of natural origin), calcium carbonate conversion, a waste product from the production of nitrogen fertilizers, but more pure in composition than previous products.

The effect of these fertilizers is very slow. Typically, liming is carried out in the fall, so that part of the fertilizer is dissolved in the soil and in the spring becomes available to plants. The greatest effect of such fertilizers appears in the second or third year, and the action itself lasts for five to seven years, depending on the doses applied and environmental conditions.

Calcium nitrate - it is also calcium nitrate, it is also calcium nitrate. Chemists, like no other, are ready to call the same substance by different names in order to confuse us!

Calcium is an element necessary for all plants, without exception. This is the basis, the bone structure of the trunk and leaves, the root and conduction systems, the cell walls.

It is not absorbed by plants as well as we would like, but in combination with nitrate nitrogen, the assimilation process is accelerated. Calcium is not reutilized by plant tissues, that is, if the lower leaves begin to die, then the outflow of calcium from them to the upper tiers does not occur, and new calcium is required to provide new shoots and leaves. The greatest effect in the absorption of calcium is observed from the combined use of root and non-root top dressing.

Therefore, it is possible to quickly provide the plant with calcium, create its bone structure, and provide the fruits with better keeping quality only through the use of calcium nitrate.

It is recommended to use it alone or in a mixture with other fertilizers, if necessary: ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, magnesium nitrate, chelated trace elements. In no case can not be used in conjunction with sulfate fertilizers - magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate; sulfate trace elements - iron sulfate, copper sulfate; phosphoric - ammophos, superphosphate, monopotassium phosphate.
